The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to protect the public following the early identification of Salmonella Tennessee in one company’s supply of hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP). This is a common ingredient used most frequently as a flavor enhancer in many processed foods, including soups, sauces, chilis, stews, hot dogs, gravies, seasoned snack foods, dips and dressings.

In coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, other federal agencies, and state health departments, FDA is closely monitoring and assessing the potential risks of illness from affected products.

“Our investigators were able to identify this problem before any illnesses occurred,” said FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg. “While the investigation is continuing, the agency is supporting reasonable steps to continue to protect the public health.”

The manufacturer of the affected product is Basic Food Flavors Inc in Las Vegas, Nevada. Only HVP manufactured by Basic Food Flavors is involved in this recall. The FDA conducted an investigation at the facility after a customer of Basic Food
Flavors reported finding Salmonella Tennessee in one production lot of HVP to the new FDA Reportable Food Registry.

FDA collected and analyzed samples at the facility and confirmed the presence of Salmonella Tennessee in the company’s processing equipment. The company is recalling all hydrolyzed vegetable protein in powder and paste form that it has produced since Sept. 17, 2009.

“This situation clearly underscores the need for new food safety legislation to equip FDA with the tools we need to prevent contamination,” said Dr. Jeff Farrar, associate commissioner for food protection, FDA’s Office of Foods.

At this time, there are no known illnesses associated with this contamination.

At this time, FDA is taking several steps to instruct industry and protect consumers from potential Salmonella infection.

FDA is advising industry that the recalled bulk HVP product should be destroyed or reconditioned according to FDA-approved procedures. FDA is also recommending recalls of certain products that might be eaten by consumers without any processing or
cooking steps to address the potential risk.

The product subject to recall includes:

The products were produced on January 7, 2010 and were distributed to retailers in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas.

The problem was discovered after the company reported consumer complaints about finding plastic materials in the product. FSIS has not received any consumer complaints or reports of injury at this time. Anyone concerned about an injury from consumption of this product should contact a physician.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

The recall is being expanded as a result of a confirmed finding of Salmonella in an unopened salami product reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The product was sampled during the course of an ongoing investigation of a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella serotype Montevideo illnesses. The product tested was not included in the previous recall (FSIS Recall 006-2010) issued January 23, but is similar to products bought by customers who later became sick in the Montevideo investigation. Product subject to the expanded recall may have been cross-contaminated with black pepper before it was packed. The company believes that black pepper is a possible source of Salmonella contamination.

Further testing is ongoing at a state health partner laboratory, and may determine if the product contained the Salmonella Montevideo strain associated with the multi-state outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), FSIS, state health and agriculture departments, and Daniele International are cooperating in this investigation. The investigation is ongoing, and has not yet definitively identified a food vehicle(s).

FSIS is continuing to work with the CDC, FDA, affected state public health partners, and the company on the investigation and will update the public on the progress of this investigation as information becomes available.

The products subject to recall include: [Recall Labels]

Wei-Chuan USA, Inc., a Bell Gardens, Calif., establishment, is recalling approximately 89,531 pounds of granulated chicken bouillon products that were ineligible for import to the U.S., the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced.

FSIS is recalling these products because the chicken bouillon does not meet poultry products inspection or poultry exemption requirements. Specifically, it could not be determined that the poultry ingredients used in the bouillon products were prepared under inspection as required by federal regulations or under a foreign inspection system determined to be equivalent. The poultry ingredient is determined to be ineligible when the source of the ingredients cannot be determined.

The problem was discovered after Customs and Border Protection notified FSIS of the ineligible imported products which originated from an unapproved source. The granulated chicken bouillon products were distributed to retail establishments in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Texas and Washington. FSIS has received no reports of illness as a result of consuming this product.

The products subject to recall include: [View Labels]

Northern Star Co. today initiated a voluntary product recall of certain retail cut-and-bagged potato products. The recall is being initiated due to laboratory testing that showed a package of Simply Potatoes Southwest Style Hash Browns to contain Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

The affected products include the following items, with “use by” dates on the package of March 29, 2009 to April 3, 2009:

       Brand Product UPC Code
Simply Potatoes Shredded Hash Browns - 20 oz. bag 20169-22233
Simply Potatoes Southwest Style Hash Browns - 20 oz. bag 20169-22236
Simply Potatoes Homestyle Slices - 20 oz. bag 20169-22237
Simply Potatoes Red Potato Wedges - 20 oz. bag 20169-22238
Diners Choice Shredded Hash Browns - 2 lb. bag 20169-22223
Farm Fresh Shredded Hash Browns - 16 oz. bag 20169-22533

There have been no illnesses associated with consumption of these products.

Northern Star Co. potato products are considered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a “not ready to eat” product, meaning that consumers must cook them properly to ensure they are safe to eat. Proper cooking of these products to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit for two minutes kills Listeria bacteria. However, consumers may return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund or replacement.

This recall affects only retail products, not Northern Star Co. foodservice products.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease marked by fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis, but it can cause fatal infections in high-risk groups such as infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Consumer inquiries can be directed to Northern Star Co.’s consumer hotline at 1-800-228-8105.

Hershey Import Company is voluntarily recalling the lots identified below of certain varieties of snacks sold under the following brands: Express Snacks, Grateful Harvest, Woodfield Farms, Woodstock Farms, Bridgehampton Gorp, Full Circle, Nature’s Promise, and Sun Harvest. Certain Hershey Import Company packaged and bulk products listed below also are being voluntarily recalled.
These products are being recalled out of an abundance of caution because they contain peanuts which have the potential of being exposed to Salmonella at the Peanut Corporation of America’s (“PCA”) Blakely, Georgia manufacturing facility. Hershey Import Company is voluntarily recalling specific lots of the products listed at the end of this release that contain peanuts manufactured at PCA’s Blakely, Georgia peanut plant.

Hershey Import Company is not affiliated with The Hershey Company, which manufactures and distributes REESE’S branded products as well as a wide range of other confectionery products.

Hershey Import Company’s, Edison, NJ manufacturing facility, where each of the below listed products were manufactured, has been tested extensively for the presence of Salmonella and to date, all test results have been negative. In addition, Hershey Import Company has not received any consumer complaints of symptoms related to Salmonella.

Hershey Import Company requests that consumers check the lot numbers of any of the below-listed products they may have purchased. The affected lot numbers are limited to:

        Lot Codes - 7001 through 9029 (inclusive)
        Expiration Dates - 01/01/08 through 01/29/10 (inclusive)

The lot number can be found on the back panel. If consumers find that they have these products in their possession marked with any of these specific lot codes or expiration dates, they are asked not to consume the products. Consumers seeking a refund for recalled products should return the product to their place of purchase. Other lot numbers of Hershey Import Company products are not affected by this recall. Hershey Import Company intends to update this notice as the situation develops.

People infected with Salmonella can have some or all of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious disease, including headache, joint pain, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

The following products, with the lot numbers and expiration dates stated above, are being recalled by Hershey Import Company and are being removed from retail stores until an alternate supply of peanuts is identified.

All sell-by dates are impacted by this recall. Specifically, Meijer has recalled the following items:

Meijer Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, UPC #0-41250-56235

Meijer Toasty Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, UPC #0-41250-56239

Meijer Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream, UPC #00000007-19283-96843-2

Meijer has taken these steps following announcements from the products’ manufacturers that they may possibly be contaminated with salmonella.

While none of the Meijer brand products have been identified as contaminated nor linked to any illness, Meijer has removed these products while the FDA continues its investigation to verify the source of a nationwide outbreak.

Meijer requests that customers who have purchased these products destroy the product or return them to any Meijer location for a full refund. If Meijer customers are unsure if they have the recalled product, they are requested to bring in the product for determination or contact the Meijer customer contact center at 800-543-3704. Consumers with questions or concerns about their health should contact their health care provider. If symptoms are present, please visit a health care provider or go to a hospital emergency room.

“The safety of our customers has always been our number one priority,” said Stacie Behler, vice president of public affairs for Meijer. “Meijer has taken these precautionary steps to help protect our customers and will return this product to our stores only once it is safe for our shoppers.”

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The FDA and other regulatory agencies have indicated that Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) is the focus of their investigation concerning a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter. PCA supplied the Company with peanut butter it used in the recalled cookies. The Company has been informed that the FDA continues its investigation as to what caused the problem with peanut butter supplied by PCA.

Consumers who have purchased any products covered by this recall are urged to return them to the store of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions or concerns about the recall may call the 24-hour toll-free hotline at 1-888-421-4699. Consumers with questions or concerns about their health should contact their doctor.
